my take on Saddam's trial.

Disclaimer: This post has got no reason, no meaning, no bullshitt nothing. You gonna stop reading? No, go ahead!! The views expressed in this post are just my reaction to the news i read (my-once-in-a-blue-moon-activity) and thought (un-believable? believe me, i still do it!! sometimes) about it for sometime. Any offense meant to any living or dead is a pure coincidence. huh, there is the end to disclaimer. whew!!

Dictated, blown apart, ransacked, looted, torn apart, paved over, neglected, filled with tensions and roughly occupied are the few words that come to my mind when i think of Iraq. No, surely not about the hanging gardens of Babylon which is (was?) one of the 7 ancient wonders. Since my childhood whenever i heard of Saddam Hussein, i heard only about the killings he was involved in, wars he fought, invasions he initialized, coups he was part of but not about the award he got from UNESCO for creating the most modern and efficient public health system in the Middle East. I mean, u n i know that he was behind a coup in 1968; iran - iraq war; kuwait invasion; 1988 massacre of kurds; gulf war; firing up oil wells in kuwait and so on n on n on. Then, how many of us know that his government has given added freedom to women (high jobs in industries and many more); that he saw himself as a secular leader; that he was the mind behind the sudden pouring-in revenue into iraq due to oil sales; that he started "National Campaign for the Eradication of Illiteracy" and was very successful; that he was behind teh modernization of iraq including the country side; and behind free hospitalization for everyone and subsidies to farmers on almost anything. Despite of all of these, he never earned a good name; how can he?? Come on! u cant kill half of your country's people and try creating the best of facilities or anything of such sorts to the remaining. That will make you a crazy maniac ruler but not a ruler with a vision.

Saddam's rule lasted throughout the Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988) (in which the United States, Soviet Union, and France backed Saddam after 1982, at least in the open), a war that ended in stalemate. In the late 1980s, Saddam Hussein's regime launched the al-Anfal campaign, which led to the disappearance of tens of thousands of Kurds (1,82,000 is the number given by Kurdish authorities for the year 1988 alone) in northern Iraq when the military razed thousands of villages, launched poison gas attacks and rounded up men, women and children before shooting them or burying them alive in mass graves. On Sunday, November 5th, 2006, Hussein's given death sentence! He deserve that! If you ask me, he should be hanged 1, 82, 000 times. But, how far its fair to kill a person? This is left to individual's thought. I am not going to judge on that.

There are mixed response everywhere. Britain, to be specific Tony bhayya has opposed the death sentence. Saala, Bush is happy about the verdict. He has hailed the conviction of Saddam Hussein for crimes against humanity as a "major achievement" and a "milestone" for Iraq's move to democracy. What I strongly feel is that though Rauf Abdul Rahman, is the judge who read out the verdict; it was Bush who has written the verdict (I just love the way this guy says this - "The only verdict is vengeance... a vendetta..."; in V for Vendetta). The tongue and the mind of the judge, the court and the court room, the witnesses spoke there and the lines they spoke, the microphones and the speakers were controlled by Bush. Ironically (i hope its not a wrong word to use), US is the one which had supported Saddam throughout his cinematic life. Saddam was involved in the United States-backed failed attempt to assassinate Qassim, the ruler of iraq in 1958. He was shot in the leg but crossed the border into syria with the help of CIA. He was taken to Beirut for CIA training course during which he was kept in upper-class apartment and used to visit American embassy frequently. CIA gave assistance to Ba'ath party which overthrown Quassim's govt. resulting in Saddam's deployment as dept. president and a rank of four star general, United States supported Saddaam with artillery and medical supplies during iran-iraq war.

The peace, democracy, love, hate nothing but the brute strength is the one which runs the world. Not just the politics, business, stock market... its your classroom, house, the playground, the streets, the colony where u lived, movie industry everywhere... its the power and the force that rules. You don't agree?? Read the Disclaimer again!! And, this power makes anyone to go to any extent to gain it. This desire to be the no. 1 in the arab area made saddam to invade iran. the fear that he might be in risk due to the revolution of shias made him to initiate the massacre. the fear that kuwait's lesser oil prices will reduce his revenues on oil made him to invade kuwait. what is the reason that made US to support Saddam and then bombing him?? the same thurst, the thurst of power. Its all there in the power!!
